The Product:
GoDaddy is one of the world’s largest providers of WordPress hosting. Our Managed WordPress product is a key pillar of GoDaddy’s business, with nearly a million sites. We know that each one of these is someone’s business, project, portfolio, wedding site, etc., and that they depend on us to make sure that it just works. There are very interesting technical challenges in keeping this many sites running as efficiently and securely as possible.
The Platform:
We are a small team that manages the core platform that all these sites run on. This includes the traffic routing, caching, monitoring, infrastructure provisioning, troubleshooting, and development of in-house software. The platform is generally containerised and managed using Nomad. There are special challenges at our scale, and a lot of the complexity comes into how we segment the customers, wire together the bits of infrastructure they need, and pass on the metadata necessary for their sites to run.
The Role:
We are looking for an experienced developer that is comfortable with Linux-based infrastructure. If you happen to be fluent in Ansible, Python, distributed data stores, Prometheus, Golang, C, PHP, Kibana, Nomad, AWS, etc., those will all be quite helpful, but because our platform is always evolving, it’s far more important that you are good at learning and curious enough to continually find new opportunities to improve the platform.
For this role, we need someone that has experience driving small projects and making technical decisions with minimal oversight. It’s critical that you be a team player, and that you are comfortable as a tech leader in an agile development team, and that you are comfortable mentoring new developers. We work closely with several other teams, and we depend on our experienced developers to identify problems and opportunities that exist across these teams.
