About the job

The Threat Detection and Response team is looking for an Engineering Manager who is passionate about finding scalable solutions to challenging technical security problems. In this role, you will lead a development team that supports the Security Incident Response function across the Twilio product portfolio and enterprise systems, meaning you will manage security engineering initiatives which support the detection and response of both internal and external information security threats. We are looking for an inspiring leader to manage a team of deeply-technical security engineers focused on creating security tooling, enhancing capabilities for threat mitigation, supporting security incident response, and building out a distributed team as we scale.


In this role, you’ll:

  • Write it down: Work directly with Business Units and Security Stakeholders to align the Detection and Response teams’ vision and strategy, while engaging the team to develop and ship specific, multi-year roadmaps, programs, and projects -ensuring prioritization, resourcing, and timely delivery of work within a changing business environment
  • Draw the Owl: Define operational metrics, key performance indicators, and service level objectives to assure the team achieves operational excellence
  • Don’t Settle: Hire, grow, and maintain a successful team capable of achieving the team’s mission
  • Be Inclusive: Coach, mentor, support, and care for the team in a way that enables long-term career development, happiness, and success at scale
  • Wear the customer’s shoes: Work with, partner, and influence other teams to solve challenges related to a broad spectrum of threat actors and activity
  • Empower Others: Build, cultivate, and maintain positive relationships with internal customers to identify and facilitate solutions to increase the impact of the team’s work
  • No Shenanigans: Ruthlessly prioritize automation and scaling every aspect of our detection and response capabilities
  • Be an owner: Develop detection strategies to identify anomalous behaviors and attacks to ensure safety within our enterprise network, corporate services, and platform applications running within a cloud environment

  • Proven experience leading with empathy, building and managing security engineering teams within a security organization, or equivalent within an engineering organization
  • Solid experience building and iterating on observability of large-scale distributed systems
  • Strong Information Security fundamentals and hands-on experience designing and implementing applications in a cloud environment
  • Exposure to SDLC from reviewing requirements through to debugging complex applications and systems in Production environments
  • Demonstrated experience working with many cross functional partners and managing programs that require stakeholder support and buy-in
  • Experience providing technical leadership and guidance, and thinking strategically and analytically to solve problems


  • Experience working in software development or security software engineering, including proven hands-on technical management experience of security engineers
  • Experience with interpreted programming languages such as Python, PERL, Ruby, etc.
  • Experience with attacker tactics, techniques, and procedures
  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline or equivalent experience


This role will be remote, USA

Approximately 0-5%travel is anticipated.

  • The estimated pay range for this role, based in Colorado, is 176,080 - 220,100
  • Non-Sales: Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Twilio's equity plan.

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location within the state. This role is also eligible to participate in Twilio’s equity plan and for the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.
