About the job

The Studio team at Twilio is seeking a Principal Engineer (L5) to build and scale the next generation of Studio, Twilio’s low code no code platform. This new role will define the long term architecture for Studio, in collaboration with multiple teams across the Twilio R&D organization. You will represent Studio in the interactions with other principal engineers and architects across the whole company, influence the wider company strategy around low code no code, and work with Studio’s engineers and product managers to help define and drive the execution of technical strategy and roadmap. You will be responsible for tackling some of the most complex and exciting technical problems in the industry. Members you will work with will be distributed in the USA and Asia Pacific.

Twilio Studio ( is our low-code visual application platform for building communication workflows. It's the fastest way to build and scale applications like IVRs and chatbots on Twilio. In this role, you’ll:

  • Draw The Owl: You’ll forge the vision for the next generation of Studio. There’s no instruction book, it’s yours to write. You’ll figure it out, ship it, and iterate. You’ll invent the future, but you won’t wing it.

  • Demonstrated track record of designing and implementing highly scalable software services.
  • 7+ years of software development experience including 3+ years leading the development of highly scalable distributed architectures.
  • Experience working with teams distributed across multiple geographical regions/time zones.
  • Experience in translating ambiguous product goals into software, building and documenting architectural solutions, and interacting with cross-functional partners to align priorities and resolve conflicts.
  • Knowledge of architectural patterns and archetypes for building mature services, especially for distributed and multi-regional systems.
  • Experience in developing and managing systems and services including technologies like Java, React, RESTFul APIS, Cassandra, MySQL, DynamoDB, CICD, Devops and other AWS services.
  • Solid understanding of automation mechanisms, leveraging existing tools to ensure stable, clean, well-tested code gets deployed to production.
  • The ability to communicate well- in person, on paper, or in code- at multiple levels (with engineers, cross-functional partners, and executives).
  • Passion for mentoring and guiding other engineers within the area.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.


This position can be fully remote from states located in the US, or if there is an office in those time zones you can be attached to those offices. The position will require working with engineers working from the Western to the Eastern US time zones, and regular sync ups with teams located in Asia Pacific.   • The estimated pay range for this role, based in Colorado, is 176.080,00 - 242.110,00
  • Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Twilio's equity plan.

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location within the state. This role is also eligible to participate in Twilio’s equity plan and for the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.
