Khan Academy’s Philanthropy Team is charged with raising the philanthropic funds needed to fund and sustain Khan Academy’s audacious mission: To provide a free, world class education to anyone, anywhere. The team raises more than 40 million annually from a variety of donors (individuals, foundations and corporations) and aims to be best in class at being mission driven and donor centered.

Khan Academy has had substantial success in securing gifts from individual donors and high net worth individuals. The time is right to build a more structured program poised for growth. This is an exciting time to join this high performing team as we undertake a number of exciting strategic projects that will increase our reach and impact.

The strategic and results oriented Director of Major and Individual Giving is responsible for building, managing and executing a vibrant individual and major donor giving program. The Director will work closely with the Chief External Relations Officer and the Manager of Individual Giving to build a structured major and individual giving program including donor prospecting, cultivation and stewardship. In this role, the Director will manage their own portfolio, soliciting major gifts (100k+). A key part of this role is to develop and support the team as we build a growing giving program. Finally, the Director will work closely with senior leadership, including the CEO and Founder, to help manage and steward donors. The Director of Major and Individual Giving will report directly to the Chief External Affairs Officer.

Duties & Responsibilities

Management: effectively manage a dynamic team to identify, secure, and steward multiple fundraising programs focused on individual and major donors

  • Provide team leadership and coaching through regular feedback and performance management, align priorities to meet revenue and goals, and appropriately delegate tasks to ensure a high-performing team that regularly meets or exceeds goals
  • Manage and develop team’s best practices in all areas of fundraising, including written and verbal communications, prospect research, proposals, meetings, events, and donor engagement
  • Oversee the accurate record-keeping of commitments, forecasting and pipeline development, implementation of marketing efforts or analytics, and budgets by working with the team and collaborating with other philanthropy subteams departments (e.g., Operations, Institutional Giving, etc.)

Strategy and Growth: working across the Philanthropy team and across Khan Academy as appropriate, to develop, implement, and evaluate short and long-term goals and strategies for meeting the Philanthropy Team’s goals

  • Constructs, oversees and executes a strong and effective major and individual gift program alongside the Chief External Affairs Officer.
  • Maximizes the efforts of senior leaders, including the Chief Executive Officer and Founder, senior leaders, and board members in the most effective and efficient way to move major and individual gift opportunities through clear communication and partnership
  • Working with the Chief External Affairs Officer, establishes annual and monthly revenue major gift and individual giving goals and provides reporting to the Vice President on major and individual giving subteam;
  • Identifies operational/process innovations as appropriate that would optimize the team’s work efforts
  • Work with leadership to create innovative new programs from grassroots campaigns to leveraging support both within and outside the organization.

Portfolio Management and Relationship building: initiate and build relationships with prospects and donors; as well as creating portfolios and pipelines for growth for members of the team to manage.

  • Manage a portfolio of donors and prospects through all stages of the fundraising process including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship Build and maintain a pipeline of donors to ensure a growing program
  • Create memorable and inspiring proposals for prospects to support by understanding Khan Academy’s strategic goals and detailed plans


  • Minimum 7-10 years of demonstrated years in philanthropy, major gifts fundraising and individual giving responsibility.
  • The ambition to confidently ask for monetary and in-kind contributions.
  • The professional and emotional intelligence to work with high-level organization leaders, staff, board members, and volunteers.
  • Proficiency in research and relevant analysis, including navigation of databases and online resources.
  • Flexibility to travel, work evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to authentic diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strong working knowledge of the philanthropic landscape, and evolving trends in philanthropy;
  • Experience in philanthropy strategy and supervision.
  • Familiarity with 501 (c)3 non-profit organizations and education technology.
  • Experience developing fundraising communications for education technology related initiatives and programs.
  • The ability to navigate CRMs (Salesforce) and research tools/databases.
